Eye-Fi's Wi-Fi capable SD Memory Card

A company called Eye-Fi has come out with a Wi-Fi capable SD memory card, which means you won't have to hook up your camera to a computer to upload photos manually when you use it.

There's a video on their site explaining how it works. (Don't watch it, it's very painful and barely tells you anything -- It's like a mini episode of the Simple Life, but worse).

Anyway, the idea is simple enough: the SD card has built-in wireless capability. Once you take your photos and take your camera back home, the card in the camera (camera must be turned on) will find your Wi-Fi router (previously configured) and upload photos to a supported photo album site on the Web that you specify, automatically. The card supports WEP and WPA, so there's some security in it.

I think it would make a good gift from kids to non computer-savvy parents. It's good to see wireless being used as an add-on to an everyday device, designed to make your life easier and simpler. Security-wise, I'm glad this supports current Wi-Fi encryption protocols.
